Is your web design and digital marketing company honest, or are they siphoning off authority from your website without your knowledge? They may even be possibly endangering your website to being penalized by Google.
If you find an active footer link on your website that links back to your service provider, they are most likely not entirely honest. These footer links are located at the bottom of the website.
Web design and marketing companies should not link back from your website in footer links with “Do Follow” links.
Our opinion on this has nothing to do with search engine optimization or marketing. Instead, it is about business ethics, professionalism, and where the role of a service provider is supposed to begin and end.
The web design and marketing companies using footer links to link back to their sites from a client site are unprofessional. The service provider is supposed to be helping the client, not siphoning their website authority. They could accomplish this visibility by simply having their name on the site in the unlinked or “No Follow” text. So, adding a link is unnecessary and greedy.
“When I see active “follow” footer links on other sites, I find them helpful information. I know who NOT to hire for internet services.”
Honestly, if a digital marketer or designer wanted to link from my business website, I would decline nicely. If they pressed for it, my consideration of their company would be concluded. The link is not necessary for attribution.
If a design, marketing, or SEO company wanted to have their name at the bottom of my site with an active “Do Follow” link, I would quote them how much it would cost to advertise there.
If you go to a big brand site such as CNN, WSJ, Today, ESPN, you do not see links to marketing companies, hosting, or web design companies. This is because their websites are not billboards for their service providers.
The client’s website content may not match the providers. So, a link to those sites is not valuable for my visitor, so it really should not be there.
I would advise against allowing a link to a provider for one simple reason: These links directly violate Google’s guidelines.
Google states Any links intended to manipulate Page-rank or a site’s ranking in Google search results may be considered part of a link scheme and violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. This statement includes any behavior that manipulates links to your site or outgoing links from your site.
If they actively build a do-follow link on other sites to affect their search results, they violate this Google guideline. So this practice isn’t very ethical.
Quick Web Designs is an honest U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business. We do not add active “footer links” to our client’s websites.
Adding a “Footer Link” would hinder new business websites because they usually do not have any relevant links yet. So instead, we link to our client’s new website from our website to help them with our page authority. This link would help push their site upward naturally.
